Zaal 2 vs Vyros 1- Adventures in Steamroller 2017

So I thought I’d try out one of the more popular Skorne Builds Zaal 2 with lots of immortals, I haven’t got 3 units though, so I had to make do with adding a unit of Venator Reivers instead. If the leaked theme is correct then 3 unit of Immortals would get 2 free ancestral Guardians and Hakar the Destroyer (17 free points which just feels dirty).
Anyway onto lessons learned..
- Zaal 2 feel really easy to use, he doesn’t do too much in himself, but Aura of Power is amazing for his army, controlling where all souls go is fantastic, and the large control area (for Skorne) is mind blowing 🙂 he has a toolbox spell list. Aura of Power makes all his troops reliable, he can help with line of sight with Mage Sight, he can protect an important piece with Vision, and has a couple of blasts including a remove from play.
- Incorporeal Immortals are fantastic…
- I need a min beast handlers if I am using the list below
- I remembered to feat.
- Reivers are good too, Zaal doesn’t do much for them, but Mage Sight could help in the future.
So here is what I brought:-
Any my opponent was Mark with Vyros 1
Looking through his list, the Birds Eye is pretty horrifying for my caster as it means he can only hide behind building if he want’s to stay safe. On the upside it makes positioning easier since I don’t need to worry about hiding him from line of sight :S
It was Scenario 3 Spread the Net from the new Steam Roller 2017 packet there are 3 zones and 2 flags
I won the role and chose the side with the difficult terrain as I could shelter Immortals behind it, and then go Incorporeal to get through it, and going 2nd gives me first scoring opportunity. He set up centrally with the archers off to my right, Imperatus is being proxied in the middle by another Jack (they all look the same to me, does that make me an Elf racist?).
I have a lot of models so have to go with a wide frontage, I kept the Reivers off to my right as I liked the look of the wall, and just lined everything else up, allowing big enough gaps to make 3″ AoE’s not too painfull.
He ran everything
I ran most things, the Reivers advanced and mini-feated to plink the force field off the right most jack. Shaman and Krea put up Paralytic Aura, Zaal 2 put up Aura of Power, and Vision on himself and camped 3 since he didn’t want to be shot to death.
The right hand jack charged and bagged an immortal, The weapon masters bunched up around the building ready to bring the pain next turn and everything else advanced.
Time for some fun, Vyros is on the far side of the building with one focus on him… tempting. The immortals all vengeance moved up, the left group went straight for the two closest jacks, the centre blob clustered round the house ready to run through it, while a couple engaged the Jack and hit him a couple of times. I tried to get line of site to Vyros by sniping out a couple of the weaponmasters but couldn’t quite get a view on him. So the central immortals went incorporeal and charged through the building to engage the swordmasters in the back, a couple came to see the Jack, and a couple blocked charge lanes towards Zaal. A few swordmasters died, the Jack was left on one box, so the Cyclops Raider had to finish it off with its gun. The Krea advanced and toe’d the right rectangular zone did its Aura to help the Reivers vs the archers. The Agoniser cried and ran into the difficult terrain by the flag to help the next lot of Immortals who went Incorporeal and some ran through the light jack to hit Imperatus, whilst the rest engaged the light Jack.
Unfortunately I forgot about Aura of Power so missed killing either of them by rolling an impressive number of 3’s and 4’s and 5’s until near the end of their activation. Zaal goes last, Feats to make all the Immortals Arm 22. I scored 2 for the Agonisers flag, and the Kreas zone, he scored one for the Archers Flag.
Turn 3 (2-1)
Mark had a nightmare of a turn, the archers shot at the Krea, all but one missed and the AoE’s did nothing to the Reivers. The one hit on the Krea didn’t hurt much. There was also an order of activation mistake and started doing things with Jacks before firing off Vyros’s feat, and discovered that Arm22 troops are hard to remove, and even after he’d feated I lost 4 immortals in total I think.
I had fury issues, so the Raider frenzied into the back of the Ancestral Guardian doing about 5 damage to him. Vengeance attacks and activations kill all the weapon masters, the light jack, leave and thanks to Aura of Power leaves Imperatus on one. The Reivers move up and execute the archers and the sniper to claim that flag, an Ancestral Guardian has 3 boosted attacks on the other jack thanks to Aura of Power, and the immortals have a couple of swings on Vyros leaving him on 6.
I score 3 to win the game 7-2 with most of his stuff dead, and I’m down 1 reiver and 5 immortals I think.
